Azithromycin is an azalide, a subclass of macrolide antibiotics. It is derived from erythromycin.
Azithromycin is used to treat or prevent certain bacterial infections, most often those causing middle ear infections, strep throat, pneumonia, typhoid, and sinusitis. In recent years, it has been used primarily to prevent bacterial infections in infants and those with weaker immune systems. It is also effective against certain sexually transmitted infections, such as non-gonococcal urethritis, chlamydia, and cervicitis.

Azithromycin is one of the world's best-selling antibiotics, marketed in the United States under the name Zithromax, and under a variety of brand names and generic labels worldwide such as Azee manufactured by Cipla Ltd, Azithromycin 3 Day Dose Pack, Azithromycin 5 Day Dose Pack, Zithromax, Zithromax TRI-PAK, Zithromax Z-Pak, Zmax.

Uses of Azithromycin Dihydrate (Generic Zithromax)

Azithromycin is used to treat many different infections including acute otitis media, streptococcal pharyngitis, gastrointestinal infections such as traveler's diarrhea, respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia, cellulitis, babesiosis, bartonella, chancroid, chlamydia, cholera, donovanosis, leptospirosis, lyme disease, malaria, mycobacterium avium complex, neisseria meningitis, pelvic inflammatory disease, pertussis, scrub typhus, syphilis, toxoplasmosis, and salmonella.
It is used to prevent bacterial endocarditis and some sexually transmitted illnesses post sexual assault. It has a similar antimicrobial spectrum as erythromycin, but is more effective against certain Gram-negative bacteria, in particular, Haemophilus influenzae.

Side Effects of Azithromycin Dihydrate (Generic Zithromax)

Most common side effects of Generic Zithromax (Azithromycin) are diarrhea (5%), nausea (3%), abdominal pain (3%), and vomiting. Fewer than 1% of patients stop taking the drug due to side-effects.
Nervousness, dermatologic reactions, and anaphylaxis have been reported. As with all antimicrobial agents, pseudomembranous colitis can occur during and up to several weeks after azithromycin therapy.

Generic Zithromax - Contraindications

Generic Zithromax is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, any macrolide or ketolide antibiotic or any inactive ingredient present in Generic Zithromax Tablets.

Azithromycin Dihydrate (Generic Zithromax) - Dosage

Generic Zithromax may be taken with or without food. However, increased tolerability has been observed when tablets are taken with food.The recommended adult dosage for the various types of infection is shown below:
Community-acquired pneumonia (mild severity)/ Pharyngitis or Tonsillitis (second line therapy)/ Skin or Skin structure (uncomplicated)
500 mg as a single dose on Day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily on Days 2 through 5.
Acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (mild to moderate)
500 mg QD x 3 days OR 500 mg as a single dose on Day 1, followed by 250 mg once daily on Days 2 through 5.
Acute bacterial sinusitis
500 mg QD x 3 days
Genital ulcer disease (chancroid)
One single 1 gram dose
Non-gonoccocal urethritis and cervicitis
One single 1 gram dose
Gonococcal urethritis and cervicitis
One single 2 gram dose
