Citalopram Hydrobromide (Celexa) - Uses, Dosage and Side Effects

Citalopram is an antidepressant drug approved by U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval to treat major depression, and is also prescribed off-label for a large number of anxiety conditions like anxiety, panic disorder, ADHD, PMDD, Body dysmorphic disorder and OCD.

Side Effects of Citalopram Hydrobromide (Generic Celexa)

Sexual dysfunction is often a side effect with SSRIs. Sexual dysfunction is found in 2-5% of patients on Citalopram, more common side effects are dry mouth (20-25%) and nausea (20-25%). Common side effects of Citalopram (Generic Celexa) include difficulty becoming aroused, lack of interest in sex, and anorgasmia (trouble achieving orgasm). Genital anesthesia, loss of or decreased response to sexual stimuli, and ejaculatory anhedonia can also occur. These sexual side effects are usually reversible, but can last for months or years after the drug has been completely withdrawn.
Common side effects of citalopram include drowsiness, insomnia, nausea, weight changes, frequent urination, decreased sex drive, anorgasmia, dry mouth, increased sweating, trembling, diarrhea, excessive yawning, and fatigue. Less common side effects include bruxism, vomiting, cardiac arrhythmia, blood pressure changes, dilated pupils, anxiety, mood swings, headache, and dizziness. Rare side effects include convulsions, hallucinations, and severe allergic reactions. If sedation occurs, the dose may be taken at bedtime rather than in the morning.

Citalopram Hydrobromide (Generic Celexa) - Dosage

Citalopram Hydrobromide Tablets are available in 10 mg, 20 mg, and 40 mg tablets, as well as 10 mg/5 mL peppermint flavor oral solution. The recommended starting dose is 20 mg/day, with a target dose of 40 mg/day. Increased efficacy has not been proven beyond 40 mg/day, but some prescribers may increase the dose to 60 mg/day or more.
The recommendation is that dose increases not exceed 20 mg/day increases per week. Citalopram is typically taken in one dose, either in the morning or evening. Citalopram can be taken with or without food.

Withdrawal Symptoms of Citalopram Hydrobromide (Generic Celexa)

SSRI discontinuation syndrome has been reported when Citalopram treatment is stopped. It is therfeore highly recommended to Taper off citalopram therapy instead of abrupt discontinuation in order to diminish the occurrence and severity of widthdrawal symptoms. Some doctors may choose to switch a patient to Prozac (Fluoxetine) when discontinuing Citalopram as it has a longer half life.

Overdosage and Overdose Symptoms of Citalopram Hydrobromide (Generic Celexa)

Overdosage may result in vomiting, sedation, disturbances in heart rhythm, dizziness, sweating, nausea, tremor, and rarely amnesia, confusion, coma, or convulsions.
